Plot

Rathnam, a fiery young man living near the Andhra border, saves a local kind-hearted rowdy Paneer Selvam Bio coming soon... >> Read More... by stabbing his enemy. It enables Paneer Selvam’s rise as he later becomes an MLA, with Rathnam as his ‘right hand’ man. He is involved in one conflict or the other. One day, he sees Mallika and starts following her. Rathnam soon realizes that some goons are trying to kill Mallika. Rathnam goes all out to protect Mallika. He puts his life on the line and saves her because she looks like her mom. This sets in motion a bloody rampage. Who are these goons? Why do they want to kill Mallika? Why did Rathnam risk his life for Mallika? This is what Rathnam is about.

Star Performances

Vishal delivered an impactful performance with complete conviction, though his character felt mediocre. He performs well in action sequences and carries the film on his shoulders. His portrayal is a decent blend of agility, intensity, and rowdy charm.  Priya Bhavani Shankar does justice to the extent she can and delivers a creditable performance. Yogi Babu's comedy sequences have their hits and misses. Murali Sharma, Hareesh Peradi, and Muthukumar did their best to bring out the villains. The remaining cast members fulfill their roles adequately, serving the narrative as needed.

Analysis

Rathnam is essentially an action-packed and violence-oriented film with dramatic moments. One must not expect a mind-blowing plot or deep character development; that‘s not what this film is about. The emotional bits are just there to give his violence a semblance of justification. It is your typical action movie formula – action sequences, fast-paced, and unrelenting – but even by the director's standards, it feels sluggish at times. There is room for improvement, like reducing the family drama at Mallika’s place.

Once you get past the cheesy setup, you can settle in and enjoy the action spectacle. We are talking knives, machetes, adrenaline-pumping car chases, and even an impressive, single-shot car chase sequence that is genuinely thrilling. Vishal's over-the-top, brutal knockdowns of many villains have an exceptional impact on viewers. When you’re in the grooving with such action, you hardly give a damn about the story or logic. Also, the fast-paced editing and liberal use of slow-motion elevate his action sequences, showcasing his fighting prowess with stylish flair. The film's soundtrack bears the mark of Devi Sri Prasad. His over-the-top score will keep ringing in your ears even after you leave the theatre. It’s a blend of masala numbers and emotionally charged melodies. M. Sukumar's cinematography captures the essence of Hari's vision, bringing the fast-paced action to life. He skillfully and neatly captures the action sequences, enhancing the visual prowess of the film. The production design is good, too. The editing is below par as the film looks overstretched. Many action sequences feel repetitive, with slight variations in setting and flimsy excuses for the villains to start the next round of mayhem. As far as filmmaking goes, Director Hari has tried to be fresh and inventive, but the soul of the film is outdated. The quality of the dialogue and the emotions are straight from his old movies.

What’s There?

  • The acting performances of the film are pretty decent.
  • The movie’s cinematography is good, especially during the action sequences.

What’s Not There?

  • There are plot holes in the film’s story.
  • The editor could have been better.
  • The prolonged climax sequence lacks exciting elements.

Verdict

Rathnam is a clichéd mass masala entertainer that is neither massy nor has masala. On the whole, this film is a disappointing action drama that lacks proper emotions. It introduces many subplots but fails to provide a satisfactory conclusion to all. However, the action sequences of this film are impressive.
